International doctors and nurses preparing to work in the National Health Service (NHS) need support with transition to working in a new health care system and adjustment to life in a new country. Successful transition occurs when there is a structured programme of training and support that focuses on, the culture and values of the hosting organisation, effective training especially in communication and intercultural awareness and help with developing supportive professional and social networks. If all three levels work successfully, individual international doctors and nurses feel welcome and committed to the employing NHS Trust.

While professional roles and structures may not vary that much across the world, there are important local distinctions in relation to professional vocabularies, inter cultural communication with specific emphasis on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) issues. All this is necessary for positive mental health and well-being that in turn helps with effective internal communication and working in multiprofessional teams. Learning and confidence building is much more effective if programmes use experiential learning techniques associated with Health Action Training (HAT) such as role play and applied drama.

Beginning with video and online workshops in the home country, this course is offered in partnership with the employing NHS Trust. The course is aimed at complementing existing processes associated with welcoming and mentoring international doctors and\or nurses. Content will be tailored to suit individual disciplinary groups. It is aimed specifically at helping participants gain knowledge, skills and confidence in dealing with intercultural communication issues, reflect on personal mental health and well- being and adaptation to living and working in a new country.

At the end of the module learners will be able to:
• Express personal concerns, required adjustments to roles, responsibilities, professional and ethical expectations associated with working in the NHS while also gaining practical tips on day-to-day working.

• Apply Health Action Training methods to explore challenges in inter-cultural communication associated with working in multiprofessional teams and living in a new culture.

• Explore approaches that support health and wellbeing throughout transition and establish professional and social support networks that facilitate the changeover to working in a new culture.
