Coping with Crisis:
Resilience and Growth

Crisis situations are commonplace in all work settings. Failure to reflect and properly debrief on such experiences may have long-term consequences for individuals, teams, and organisations. All staff at all levels need an opportunity to reframe challenging experiences and develop a fresh perspective on resilience that is growth orientated. Experiential learning and reflection are key to such development Health Acton Training (HAT) workshops that are face to face or via Zoom and involve role plays, reflective discussion,  creation of realistic scenarios and online support, prompt appropriate learning. While the learning outcomes of the course are predetermined, dialogical pedagogy involves open discussion with learners so that they set the agenda and influence the content and learning processes.

This course aims to engage learners in an interdisciplinary process that uses applied drama techniques to improve interpersonal communication skills while also enhancing coping skills and person-centeredness to deal with the hazards and issues that present in crisis situations.

At the end of the module learners will be able to:

• Understand and engage with simulated communication practice and critically reflect on how this might support evidence informed response to challenging experiences associated with living and working during crisis situations.

• Apply Health Action Training performance techniques and practices in a range of role play scenarios and evaluate the effect these have on enhancing personal resilience and post traumatic growth in person centred practice.

• Identify and reflect on methods to improve self-care and enhance personal resilience, while building support networks, sharing best practices and role modelling advanced communication in crisis.

Assessment

Participants will be supported in the performance of short role plays that illustrate knowledge and understanding of course content. Creative personal reflections will also be used to capture development and prompt fresh coping methods. The course team will provide feedback and feedforward. Opportunities for ‘peer assessment’ will exist.

Accreditation: International CPD Standards Office
